About your skin

We were all born with smooth, baby-soft skin. But as we mature, our skin is subjected to numerous experiences that leave it less than perfect. Most harmful by far is the sun, which causes the lines and wrinkles that appear as we get older.

In fact, most characteristics associated with aging, such as wrinkles, deep furrows and leathery skin, are caused by years and years of normal sun exposure and not the natural aging process.

Other surface imperfections, such as chicken pox and acne scars from our youth, of moles and warts, which can develop over time, may mar the skin.

Long-time alcohol use and smoking can also take a toll on our skin.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could erase much of the sun damage and other imperfections and restore the healthy, youthful-looking appearance our skin once had!

Laser skin resurfacing with the CO2 Laser does just that - by gently and precisely removing microscopic layer of skin, tightening sagging skin, and stimulating new collagen growth.

The sun and your skin

The thin, top layer of our skin (the epidermis) rests on a deeper layer (the dermis) that is composed of elastic fibres and collagen. Collagen is the basic building block of skin, supplying structure and support.

Over time, the sun breaks down collagen, creating fibres that do not fully stretch and recoil. This is what causes wrinkles and furrows. The sun's rays also cause superficial skin lesions that can become cancerous.

Safe, precise, predictable

The CO2 laser uses a very high-energy beam of light to vapourise scars, lines, wrinkles, and other skin defects layer-by-layer. Laser penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safer and more predictable than treatments such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, and reducing the risk of scarring or uneven pigmentation that may be found with these other treatments.

CO2 laser skin resurfacing and collagen

The procedure called laser skin resurfacing, performed with the CO2 laser, gently removed surface imperfections, including age spots and precancerous lesions, and tightens skin to dramatically reduce lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates new collagen growth in the dermis, effectively restructuring and restoring skin to a healthy state that closely resembles non-sun-damaged skin. Your skin looks younger, fresher and firmer.

Post-procedure discomfort varies from patient-to-patient, with some patients requiring little or no medication and others needing more. Because pain tolerance is highly individual, your doctor will make sure you're comfortable during and after the procedure.

After the procedure

In the first few days after the procedure, your skin will weep as new tissue and collagen are formed by the dermal layer. It will then go through a period of crusting for a few days.

When the crusting is gone, the fresh new skin will be reddish-pink (called erythema), which usually fades in 4-12 weeks. (Erythema is a sign that you are healing. Blood is actively nourishing the growth of your skin cells.) The pinkness is easily camouflaged by make-up, which usually may be applied in 7-10 days, depending on the depth of treatment and your skin's response to the procedure.
